Ocean Centres Indonesia Focus Group Discussion

The Safety of Ocean Renewable Energy in Indonesia: Strengthening Engineering, Structural, and Governance Readiness for Indonesia's Emerging Ocean Energy Sector

Add to calendar:

Ocean Centres Indonesia, under UN Global Compact Network Indonesia (IGCN), will convene a Focus Group Discussion titled “The Safety of Ocean Renewable Energy in Indonesia: Strengthening Engineering, Structural, and Governance Readiness for Indonesia’s Emerging Ocean Energy Sector.” The discussion will be held on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, from 09.00 to 12.00 WIB via Zoom Meeting. This FGD aims to open an early dialogue on the importance of integrating safety into the development of ocean renewable energy in Indonesia—not only from the perspective of technology and investment, but also from the readiness of engineering systems, offshore structures, standards, and governance.

Key Discussion Points

The discussion will bring together scientific, technical, and policy perspectives to explore how ocean renewable energy can be developed safely, adaptively, and sustainably in Indonesia. The session will feature three key speakers:

  1. Dr. Ir. Erwandi, M.Eng.,  Research Center for Hydrodynamics Technology, BRIN, who will provide an overview of the development of ocean renewable energy in Indonesia, including its potential, opportunities, and challenges within the national energy transition agenda.
  2. Prof. Dr. Ketut Buda Artana, ST, MSc.,  Department of Marine Engineering, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, who  will discuss safety in ocean renewable energy engineering systems, particularly related to design, system integration, operation, maintenance, and technological reliability in complex marine environments.
  3. Prof. Ir. Eko Budi Djatmiko, MSc, PhD.,  Department of Offshore Engineering, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, who  will highlight structural safety considerations for offshore renewable energy installations, including hydrodynamic conditions, structural strength, corrosion, material fatigue, and long-term reliability in Indonesian waters.

Why This Discussion Matters

As ocean renewable energy continues to gain attention as part of the clean energy transition, safety must be embedded from the earliest stages of planning and development. Through this FGD, Ocean Centres Indonesia seeks to identify key safety issues, map the need for standards and capacity-building, and strengthen collaboration among government, academia, research institutions, industry, and safety practitioners.

Join the Discussion

We invite Ocean Centres stakeholders, including Champion Companies, Members, Knowledge Partners, Ally Partners, policymakers, researchers, industry actors, and safety professionals to join this important conversation. Together, we can help build a stronger safety foundation for Indonesia’s emerging ocean renewable energy sector and support a more resilient and sustainable ocean economy.
